PM Modi inaugurates new Parliament building, installs Sengol in House, see pics

New Parliament building inauguration: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Parliament building on May 28 morning in a grand ceremony. As many as 21 Dharmapuram Adheenam seers from Chennai handed over the Sengol to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday. Dressed in traditional attire, the PM performed Ganapati puja along with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. He prostrated before the Sengol.

PM Modi sought blessings from high priests of various Adheenams in Tamil Nadu and then installed the ‘Sengol’ spectre near the Lok Sabha Speaker’s chair in the new Parliament building. He also unveiled a plaque inaugurating the new building and felicitated workers who were involved in the construction of the building.

Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, S Jaishankar and BJP national president JP Nadda were present.

Opposition boycotts inauguration

Over 20 opposition parties, including the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), AAP, Trinamool Congress (TMC), and the Janata Dal (United) boycotted the ceremony.

Union Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda said the opposition parties should not do politics and urged them to participate in the inauguration ceremony to strengthen democracy.

Security was been beefed up around the new Parliament building ahead of its inauguration. Over 70 police personnel were deployed in and around the area, Delhi Police Special CP Deepender Pathak said.

PM Modi participated in a multi-faith prayer meeting at the new Parliament building and met various people.

The building is part of the revamped Central Vista project. Its construction started in 2019 and has been built at an estimated cost of Rs 1,200 crore. The new building has three storeys and is built in an area of 64,500 sqm.

Traffic advisory by police

The Police had already issued a traffic advisory that said that New Delhi district will be treated as a controlled area and entry of vehicles will be restricted. The Parliament Building is located in a high-security area. Besides additional deployment, there CCTV cameras are continuously monitoring all activity in the area.

The Delhi traffic police urged people to plan their journey accordingly and avoid the New Delhi district from 5:30 am to 3 pm. All entry, exit gates at Central Secretariat, Udyog Bhawan metro stations remained closed for passenger movement.
