UU Lalit: The government has reportedly asked UU Lalit, the Chief Justice of India, to choose his replacement.
On November 8, Chief Justice UU Lalit will step down, and Justice DY Chandrachud will take his place.
According to sources, the Chief Justice has received a letter from the Union Law Ministry asking him to appoint a successor.
As is customary, the collegium, the highest-ranking Supreme Court group responsible for selecting judges, cannot meet after the name of the next Chief Justice has been recommended.
The letter was written in the midst of a conflict between the collegium’s members over the Supreme Court nominations of four justices, including a prominent advocate.

On September 30, the collegium was scheduled to discuss the four candidates for the Supreme Court. Due to a large caseload that day, Justice Chandrachud presided over his court until late in the evening, therefore the group of justices was unable to convene.
The next day, October 1, the court adjourned for the Dussehra holidays.

Two judges from the collegium have objected to Chief Justice Lalit’s request for their written opinions on the suggestion of four candidates. They reportedly stated that their opinions couldn’t be expressed in writing and that the names should only be addressed in meetings in accordance with custom.
