Those protesting in Beijing against Chinese President Xi Jinping are being searched vigorously. Chinese government officials are keeping a close eye on social media, so that they can get any clue of the protesters from anywhere. Protesters waved banners at the Sitong Bridge in Beijing’s Haidian district. He also called for the end of China’s zero Covid policy and the overthrow of Xi Jinping’s power. The protest was held when the Chinese Communist Party Congress is to begin on Sunday. In the same Congress, 2300 delegates will formally approve the appointment of Xi Jinping as the President of China for the third time. Such protests against Xi Jinping in Beijing are considered quite rare and dramatic. China’s state media has remained silent on these demonstrations, while on Thursday many videos and photos of the incident were shared on social media. China immediately removed such pictures and videos from indigenous social media platforms like WeChat but could not do so on platforms like Twitter, Facebook.
Some people hang two posters on the Sitong Bridge during a protest in Beijing on Thursday. At the same time, at another place, a crowd of some people protested by burning tires on the streets. In some of the video footage being shared, people’s slogans against Jinping were also heard. Reports said that one person has been arrested in connection with the protest. Photos of the incident showed police officers surrounding the man, who was wearing a yellow cap and orange clothes. Many people have also praised this lone arrested protester. On social media, the protester is being called hero and tank man. Tank man refers to the unknown Chinese man who stood in front of tanks during the Tiananmen Square protest in 1989.
Chinese online spies have named a Chinese researcher and physicist from a village in the northern province of Heilongjiang as the mastermind of the protests. It was this person who posted the manifesto on the popular research site Research Gate. Although it was later removed, someone else has uploaded several copies of it to other sites. In this 23-page document, that Chinese researcher had called for demonstrations like strike, civil disobedience. This also included vandalizing the Covid testing center on Sunday. It was written that its purpose was to prevent dictator Xi Jinping from continuing in office illegally, so that China can follow the path of democracy and freedom.
A large number of Chinese citizens have sent congratulatory messages on the man’s two Twitter accounts. People claim that due to this Chinese researcher, they have got the power to raise their voice against Jinping. One person wrote that you are a hero and you have my respect, while another wrote: “Salute to the hero of the people! Hope you can be back safely!” Images and videos posted on Chinese social media platforms with keywords such as “Haidian”, “Beijing Protector” and “Sitong Bridge” have been removed. Several hashtags, including “bridge” and “hero”, have also been dropped in the search. Several Chinese nationals have claimed that their accounts on the social media platform WeChat have been temporarily banned for posting pictures of the protest.
