Objectifying women
Badlapur was released in 2015 where she played the role of actor Vinay Pathak’s wife. The film was a hit and Radhika was appreciated for her acting but filmmakers started giving her roles in similar genre – sex comedy, which she rejected. Radhika says she has no problem with the sex comedy genre, but in this genre, women are presented as a commodity which is not acceptable to her.
Radhika told Bollywood Hungama in an interview, “After Badlapur I was offered some sex comedy roles. Hunter was also a sex comedy, but in Bollywood we have the kind of sex comedy that degrades women. If you look at it, Bollywood sells women like commodity in the name of sex comedy and I don’t like that.”
Was rejected
Radhika also said that when someone reads the script related to this genre in front of her, she knows what the movie is about and what kind of jokes are being made. Radhika Apte was last seen on the big screen in Vikram Vedha.
In another interview, Radhika said “I recently got rejected because the other actor had bigger lips and bigger breasts. I was told, ‘She looks sexier, and sells more’. It was a good film being made by people whom I respect. You look up to [certain people], and think, ‘They won’t be into this’. But they also [have such a mindset]. Hopefully, the more women we have in [positions of power], the more things will change.”
Radhika Apte will be next seen in the psychological thriller Forensic, which co-stars Vikrant Massey.
