It should be recalled that Dhoni filed a legal complaint in 2014 to permanently enjoin Sampath Kumar, who was the inspector general of police at the time, from mentioning the cricketer in connection with match-fixing and spot-fixing of contests.
Dhoni requested that the court order him to pay damages in the amount of Rs 100 crore. According to a temporary ruling made by the court on March 18, 2014, Sampath Kumar was prohibited from criticising Dhoni in any way.
Sampath specified he didn’t say anything to Dhoni
Sampath Kumar allegedly filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court, in defiance of the ruling, in which he made critical remarks against the legal system and the senior attorney defending the State in the cases brought against him.
The Madras High Court put the matter under notice and added it to its file in December 2021. Sampath Kumar, a former IPS officer, is accused of making comments against the judiciary, allegedly in violation of the court’s interim order from 2014, which is why MS Dhoni filed the current contempt application on October 11 of this year after receiving permission from Advocate-General R Shanmugasundaram on July 18 to do so.
