Russia-Ukraine War: On Wednesday, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu gave orders for his soldiers to leave the captured Ukrainian city of Kherson and establish defensive positions on the other bank of the Dnipro River.
The declaration signalled one of Russia’s biggest withdrawals and perhaps a turning point in the war, which is now approaching the end of its ninth month.

General Sergei Surovikin declared on television
The war’s general commander, General Sergei Surovikin, declared on television that Kherson City could no longer be supplied.
Surovikin said, “We will save the lives of our soldiers and fighting capacity of our units. Keeping them on the right (western) bank is futile. Some of them can be used on other fronts.”
Following weeks of Ukrainian advances on the city and a scramble by Russia to evict tens of thousands of its citizens, the news was released.
I concur with your judgments and recommendations, Shoigu retorted. Continue the army withdrawal and make every effort to move the units across the river.
Influential war bloggers in Russia had anticipated the announcement, which they called a painful blow.

A black page in the history of the Russian army
“Apparently we will leave the city, no matter how painful it is to write about it now,” according to the War Gonzo blog, which has more than 1.3 million Telegram followers.
It stated, “In simple terms, Kherson can’t be held with bare hands, Yes, this is a black page in the history of the Russian army. Of the Russian state. A tragic page.”
