After the announcement of Russia’s withdrawal from Kherson, a big statement of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has come to the fore. President Zelensky said that Kherson is now under Ukrainian occupation. However, it may take some time for the situation to return to normal, he said. Due to the Ukrainian attacks, Russia has decided to withdraw its army from Kherson. In a statement issued by Zelensky, it was said that the army of Ukraine has reached the city and the search work is going on.
Ukraine Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba Praises Russia
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has praised Russia for this step. Also, the Kherson incident has been termed as a major victory in the war. He tweeted and wrote, ‘This is another important victory for Ukraine at this time and it proves that whatever Russia says, whatever Russia does, the victory will be for Ukraine.’ It is being told that now the forces of Ukraine have reached Kherson and have taken this place under their control.
There are reports that injured Russian soldiers have been left there and some have been taken prisoner. Also, firing was done on the Russian soldiers who were crossing the Dnieper river. The Guardian quoted a Russian soldier as saying that some units were told to run as far as they could.
Some bridges were blown up
As soon as it was told by the Ministry of Defense of Russia that the withdrawal of troops was complete, important bridges built on the Dnieper River were blown up. Russia remained on the defensive, insisting that the withdrawal was in no way intended to embarrass President Vladimir Putin. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow still viewed the Kherson region as part of Russia. He said the Kremlin had no regrets for celebrating the illegal annexation of Kherson and three other Ukrainian regions about a month ago.
Shortly before this announcement of the withdrawal of Russia’s troops, the office of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, called the situation in the Kherson region ‘difficult’. In the pictures that came from Kherson on Friday morning, it was clearly visible that Ukrainian soldiers are being welcomed here. There are reports that Russia has shelled some of the villages and towns that Ukrainian troops have recaptured in the past few weeks during their campaign in the Kherson region.
Russia’s strategic defeat
Kherson borders Crimea and provides Russia with a land route to the Black Sea. In 2014, Russia annexed Crimea. If Ukrainian forces remain aggressive in this area, then Russia will be deprived of a major victory. Such a fight would bring Ukraine closer to Crimea, which Russia considers strategically important for itself.
