Donald Trump made it official that he is fighting for the 2024 US President’s Election. The recent outcome in the mid-term polls in the US does not augur well for Trump, but the moot question is – if he wins what will be his approach towards India when the largest democracy has taken a firm stand of not aligning with the anti-Russia brigade? India in no terms can be dictated today instead plays a genuinely independent role while ensuring its national interests over and above any geopolitical agenda. Will Narendra Modi be able to derive desired advantages in the larger interests of the country?
Trump is back in the race for the 2024 US President Election. He filed required federal papers and declared in front of hundreds of his supporters gathered in the gilded ballroom at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, thus becoming the first major contender from either party to formally declare.
In a speech broadcast live on US television, Trump thanked hundreds of supporters in a ballroom decorated with several chandeliers and lined with dozens of American flags. “To make America great again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for President of the United States,” Trump said to a cheering phone-waving crowd of donors and longtime supporters.
“America’s comeback starts right now.” Two years ago, we were a great nation and soon we will be a great nation again,” he said.
Death Penalty for Drug Peddlers a part of Election Manifesto
He proclaimed that he would push for the death penalty for drug dealers and term limits for lawmakers and rehire members of the military who had been dismissed for refusing to get the Covid-19 vaccine.
Although he assailed the US election process, he significantly did not touch the idea to relive his claims of massive fraud in 2020 and also deliberately avoided the Jan6, 2021 Capitol Hill attack by his supporters. Trump as usual also displayed his bravado by declaring that he is not going to be intimidated by the left-wing groups, the Washington establishment and the news media. He said that he will persevere and march forward into the torrent.
There is a long road ahead before the Republican nominee is formally selected in the summer of 2024, with the first state-level contests more than a year away.
Meanwhile, President Biden reciprocated Trump’s announcement by saying that the Republicans “failed” the US while in office. “Donald Trump failed America,” Biden posted on Twitter from Bali, where he was attending the last day of the Group of 20 summits.
The tweet was accompanied by a video compilation saying that Donald Trump presided over “rigging economy for rich”, “attacking health care”, “coddling extremists”, “attacking women’s rights”, and “inciting a violent mob” to try and overturn his 2020 election loss to Biden.
Trump’s early announcement aimed at fending potential challengers
The unusual but intentional early launch is most probably aimed at fending off potential challengers for the party’s nomination in 2024, including rising star Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, 44, and Trump’s own former vice president Mike Pence.
Donald Trump planned to push ahead despite mixed results, with losses by celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania and Don Bolduc in New Hampshire contributing to Republicans’ failure to win a majority in the US Senate.
Multiple Trump-aligned candidates who ran on platforms focused on his false claims of widespread election fraud were also defeated.
Trump faces an up-hill task
Now, with all these adverse circumstances, Trump has a very up-hill task ahead, besides his personal reputation has been badly bruised owing to the dismal performance of the Republicans in the recent mid-term Congressional polls and when many accuse him of this beating, the chances of Trump coming back to power in 2024 appears highly improbable.

Trump’s India Card amid Modi’s resolute and independent Foreign Policy
Situations may change in future, nothing can be forecasted and nothing is permanent in politics. And if ‘fortune favours the brave’ (DT undoubtedly is a fighter) – Trump romps home in 2024, what will be his approach towards resolute India with its firm independent policy aligned with its sovereign interest is the fundamental concern for Indians.
Donald Trump has promised that he will take America’s relationship with India to the next level again if he wins the presidential election in 2024.
In a Diwali speech organised by the Republican Hindu Coalition (RHC) at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Trump told a gathering of about 200 Indian-Americans that he shared a great relationship with Hindus, India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He said he would nominate RHC founder Shalabh Kumar as his ambassador to India if he got elected as the US president in 2024.
A video of Trump’s speech at the Diwali reception last Friday was released by RHC on Tuesday, in which the former President had not announced his candidature, said if he does run for the next elections, and goes on to win in 2024, he has certain commitments towards the Indian-American community.
Trump said he probably would not have won in 2016 but for the support from the Hindu community in the battleground States.
But, will he win? A distant dream more so when Republicans have been handed a drubbing recently.
