FIFA World Cup 2022: With a late lead provided by Olivier Giroud’s header and Harry Kane missing from the spot to give France a 2-1 victory at Al Bayt Stadium on Saturday, the defending champions advanced to the World Cup semifinals in Qatar.
After Aurelien Tchouameni had given France the lead in the 17th minute with a penalty kick, Kane had earlier levelled the score from the spot. However, Olivier Giroud had headed in what would ultimately be the game-winning goal 12 minutes later.

Olivier Giroud takes France to the semifinals
The French will play Morocco on Wednesday for a spot in the championship game on Sunday, where they will face either Croatia or Argentina. After earlier tying Wayne Rooney’s record with his 53rd goal for the Three Lions, Kane had a chance to become England’s all-time greatest scorer when he missed a penalty.
With four goals in this tournament, France’s all-time leading scorer, Giroud is now closing in on teammate Kylian Mbappe for the Golden Boot. Given that it presently separates France and England for a position in the semifinal, this may have been the most crucial one. Giroud’s goal might provide the defending champions the boost they need to finish this game in style and move on to the semifinal after they have struggled for much of the second half.

France coach speaks on the win
France coach Didier Deschamps said, “I regret that we gave them a penalty and then another penalty that they missed, but credit to my team, We showed some very good things and we could still be dangerous after the second goal.”
Continuing further, he wrote, “We have very impressive mental strength but to some extent England have that, too. In these very important games it always comes down to very small details and luckily tonight it went our way. You need a bit of luck sometimes.”
