Yamaha RX100: In spite of the fact that it has been out of production for more than 25 years now, the Yamaha RX100 is still considered an icon in India. Too many people want to buy it on the used two-wheeler market, and some owners are even asking more than a lakh of rupees for their RX100s. Up until now, Yamaha hadn’t said anything about bringing back the RX100 name in India. But in a recent meeting with the media, Eishin Chihana, the Chairman of Yamaha India, told that a new motorcycle with the RX100 name will be coming out soon.
New bike will be focused on performance
Chihana says that Yamaha is looking at several options for putting the RX100 name on a new motorcycle. But he also said that the new motorcycle will be focused on performance, which makes sense given that the RX100 is a fast commuter that has a cult following. But, unlike the last generation of RX100, the new one won’t have a two-stroke engine. This is because the strict BS6 emission standards don’t allow a two-stroke motorcycle to be used on the road.

For the new Yamaha RX100, it’s possible that the Japanese brand will go with a modern neo-retro look to match the old-school feel of the original model. In recent years, there has been a lot of interest in “neo-retro” roadsters. Royal Enfield’s Hunter 350 and Classic 350, the Jawa 42, the Yezdi Roadster, and the Honda CB350 H’ness are some of the most popular bikes in this space. Yamaha might also release the new RX100 with a larger four-stroke engine instead of a 100cc engine to keep its fame as a fast motorcycle.
Yamaha Motor Corp. and Escorts teamed up
In 1983, Yamaha Motor Corp. and Escorts teamed up, and the RD350 was the first product from the new company. It was the RD350B that was made for India that was sold in other countries. Around the same time, IND-Suzuki released the AX100, which got a lot of attention from the market. The AX100, which had a relatively modest engine powering it, quickly won over the hearts of young people.

In the latter half of 1983, Yamaha introduced the RX100 to the market after analysing the AX100’s level of commercial success. The RX100 was a hit right away because it was more powerful than the AX100 and cost less money. The AX100 made 8.25 Bhp of power, which the RX100 customers used to get 11 Bhp of power. Over the course of more than a decade, Yamaha never made any major changes to the bike.
Fast as any modern 150-160cc motorcycle
The first Yamaha RX100 had a two-stroke, single-cylinder, 98cc engine that could make a maximum of 11 PS of power and 10.39 Nm of torque. There has never been another 100cc motorcycle that has been able to match these specifications, and this despite the fact that it has been discontinued for such a long period of time. With a curb weight of only 103 kg, the RX100 had a great power-to-weight ratio for a motorcycle of its size and class. This made it as fast as any modern 150-160cc motorcycle.
Yamaha only sells 150cc and 250cc motorcycles in India at the moment. These include the FZ, FZ-S, FZ-X, FZ-25, MT-15, and YZF-R15. Yamaha has 125cc scooters like the Ray-ZR and Fascino in addition to the niche Aerox 155. Before the BS6 emission norms deadline in March 2020, Yamaha stopped making 110cc and 125cc commuter bikes in India.
