MCD Mayoral Elections: As the inaugural meeting of the newly elected Municipal Corporation of Delhi House got underway on Friday, AAP and BJP councillors argued over the selection of 10 aldermen by Lt. Governor VK Saxena.
In order to preside over the elections for the mayor and deputy mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), BJP councillor Satya Sharma was sworn in.
What ignited the clash?
AAP MLAs and council members started to object after Sharma asked alderman Manoj Kumar to take an oath. Many more hurried to the House’s well while yelling slogans.
Council members of the BJP replied by yelling insults at the leader of the AAP, Arvind Kejriwal, while AAP members retaliated by yelling insults at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The AAP claims that Saxena chose BJP leaders to serve as aldermen despite their lack of civic knowledge.
Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, voiced his opposition to the situation in a letter to Saxena on Thursday.
