Santokh Singh: Congress MP from Jalandhar Chaudhary Santokh Singh died during Bharat Jodo Yatra on Saturday morning in Punjab’s Phillaur. He was walking along with Rahul Gandhi in the yatra when he suddenly fell unwell as his heartbeat increased.
The MP was rushed to Phagwara’s Virk hospital by an ambulance, where doctors declared him brought dead. Rahul Gandhi left Bharat Jodo Yatra and reached the hospital after receiving the news.
Congress leaders Rana Gurjeet Singh and Vijay Inder Singla confirmed Singh’s demise.

CM Bhagwant Mann offers condolences
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann offered his condolences at Santokh Singh’s demise in Punjabi on Twitter.
He wrote, “I am deeply saddened by the untimely death of Congress Member of Parliament from Jalandhar, Santokh Singh Chowdhury.. May God rest his soul in peace.”
Singh was the former Cabinet Minister of Punjab and a Member of Parliament from Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituency. He had won the 2014 and 2019 General Elections.
Punjab leg of Yatra
Meanwhile, Bharat Jodo Yatra commenced on September 7 last year from Kanyakumari and will culminate on January 30 in Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir.
On Saturday Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had resumed his Bharat Jodo Yatra from Ladhowal Toll Plaza in Ludhiana after a one-day break. On Friday the Punjab police had issued an alert to the field officers about a threat of hand grenade attacks on police vehicles. A letter to this effect was shot off to the top police officials by the office of Punjab Additional Director General of Police (Security) on January 11 when the eight-day Punjab leg of the yatra entered Punjab. The letter did not mention the Congress Yatra.
