Congress leader quits: Congress suffered a major setback as the party’s Jammu and Kashmir spokesperson Deepika Pushkar Nath resigned merely days ahead of the Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra enters the union territory. Bharat Jodo Yatra will enter J&K on Friday.
Nath took to Twitter to announce that her decision to resign was due to the inclusion of former Jammu and Kashmir minister Choudhary Lal Singh in the Yatra.
Accuses Lal Singh of backing Kathua rape accused
She accused Lal Singh of backing the Kathua rape accused and said she was “left with no option but to resign” from the Congress. She said she cannot share the party platform with such a person on ideological grounds.
“In view of Ch.Lal Singh’s proposal of joining @bharatjodo & @INCJammuKashmir allowing the same, I am left with no other option but to resign from @INCIndia. Lal Singh was responsible in sabotaging the Kathua rape case in 2018 by brazenly defending rapists,” said Nath on Twitter.
Deepika is a human rights lawyer based in Jammu and had spearheaded the movement to get justice for the Kathua rape victim. She had initially represented the victim’s family in the case.
He was forced to resign as Jammu & Kashmir forest minister in the erstwhile BJP-PDP government. He allegedly supported the Kathua rape and murder accused in 2018.
Lal Singh is ex-BJP leader
The two-time MP and three-time MLA parted ways with the Congress in 2014 and joined the BJP. After being forced to resign as minister, he left the BJP in 2019 and formed his own political outfit Dogra Swabhiman Sangathan Party (DSSP).
The Yatra will see the participation of top J&K leaders. Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah of J&K National Conference (NC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti, and MY Taragami of CPM will join the yatra.
