WI vs ZIM: West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul created history during the first Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, as they became the first opening pair in the 21st century to bat in excess of 100 overs in an inning.

Continuing their batting into the third day of a rain-affected Test, the duo also became only the second opening pair to face over 600 deliveries in a Test innings. Despite their impressive performance, they fell just short of breaking the previous record held by Sri Lanka’s Marvan Atapattu and Sanath Jayasuriya, who had played 114.2 overs against Pakistan in Kandy in July 2000, amassing 335 for the first wicket.
Unfortunately, Wellington Masakadza trapped Brathwaite lbw on 182, bringing an end to the opening stand at 338 in 114.1 overs, one ball short of equalling the record. Brathwaite, who had already scored his 12th Test century, reached 150 runs off 278 balls. Tagenarine, son of West Indies great Shivnarine Chanderpaul, smashed his first Test century in his third game on Day 2.

The opening duo reached 300 runs in 644 deliveries against Zimbabwe, breaking the previous record for the highest opening Test partnership for West Indies, set by Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Hayne (298 against England in 1990).
