Viral Video: Authorities in Turkey managed to resuce a 45-year-old man from under the rubble after he had been trapped for almost 12 days, following a devastating earthquake that claimed tens of thousands of lives. Despite the frigid weather, search teams continued to locate survivors throughout the week, although the number of those found dwindled to only a few in the past few days.
Man survives for 12 days in rubble
The man, Hakan Yasinoglu, was rescued after 278 hours, from Hatay, a southern province near the Syrian border that was hit hard by the 7.8-magnitude tremor. Pictures on social media showed rescuers gently carrying a stretcher with the man through the debris of a demolished building. To avoid any possible falls, he was securely strapped to the stretcher and covered with a gold thermal jacket.
He was rushed into an ambulance and driven away, and while his face was not visible, the mood among the rescuers seemed solemn, unlike previous instances where teams rejoiced and applauded.
Rescue efforts at a few sites have continued non-stop, leading to the recovery of three other individuals late Thursday and early Friday, including a 14-year-old boy.

Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay stated on Friday that search and rescue operations were ongoing in fewer than 200 sites in the area. The quake caused over 41,000 deaths in Turkey and Syria, and tens of thousands more were injured, leaving millions without shelter in freezing temperatures. The earthquake affected 11 provinces in Turkey, with rescue missions in three provinces – Adana, Kilis, and Sanliurfa – declared complete by Turkish officials.
