Delhi News: The Delhi government has recently announced an immediate ban on bike taxis, which will affect popular cab aggregators like Ola, Uber, and Rapido. The transport department of Delhi issued a notice stating that two-wheelers with private registration marks are being used to transport passengers, which violates the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. The ban will also impact many customers who rely on two-wheelers for transportation, as bikes are more agile in Delhi’s traffic and offer an affordable mode of transportation.
Ban on bike taxis will take effect immediately
However, some apps are still offering bike taxi services, and cab aggregators have yet to respond. The Delhi transport department notice clearly states that the ban on bike taxis will take effect immediately. If service providers continue to provide bike taxi services in Delhi, they will be fined Rs 5,000. If the offence is repeated, a fine of Rs 10,000 will be charged, and the driver’s license will be suspended for a minimum period of three years. The Delhi traffic police department is also checking bikes associated with Ola, Uber, and Rapido.
Safety threat to women passengers
The Delhi government’s decision comes after the Supreme Court banned Rapido services in Maharashtra. Moreover, two-wheeler cab services have no proper arrangements for an emergency button, which poses a safety threat to women passengers. Currently, Uber and Ola in Delhi still offer the option to book bike cabs, but this may change following an update and until rules are amended. An official stated that the current rules only allow four-wheeler cabs, auto-rickshaws, and e-rickshaws, as there are specific obligations to operate cab services. Vehicles should have a registration mark, yellow number plates, and a PSV badge issued after police verification, and drivers are required to undergo behavioral sessions.

Policy will be rolled out soon
Ola, Uber, and Rapido are yet to release a statement, and Delhi MLA and transport minister Kailash Gahlot tweeted about the notice. He said that an aggregator policy for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers is in its final stage and will be rolled out soon, enabling them to apply for a grant of license under the new scheme.
