The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is adamant on demanding an apology from Congress MP Rahul Gandhi for his alleged anti-national speech in the UK. In is reply to BJP’s demand, Congress leaders said that he will put his side in the parliament. The Congress leader had also met speaker Om Birla today to request him to let him speak in the parliament. The Congress leader said that he is hopeful he will be allowed to speak tomorrow.
‘My democratic right to have opportunity’
“I went to Parliament with the idea of putting what I have said or what I feel on the floor of the House. Four ministers have raised allegations against me in Parliament. It is my right to be allowed to speak on the floor of the House. I requested the Speaker today… I went to his chamber and requested him, saying that I would very much like to speak. I told him that people from the BJP have made allegations against me and, as a Member of Parliament, it is my right to speak. He was non-committal, and in his way smiled. But I am hopeful that I will be allowed to speak tomorrow,” Gandhi said.
“As the allegations have been made in parliament by the four ministers, it is my democratic right to have the opportunity… If Indian democracy was functioning, I would be able to say my piece in parliament. What you are seeing is a test of Indian democracy. After four leaders of the BJP have made allegations about a member of parliament, is that MP going to be given the same space that those four ministers have been given or will he be told to shut up?” he asked.
Hopeful that I will be allowed to speak: Rahul Gandhi
Speaking about the allegations against him, Gandhi said: “The story started the day I gave my speech in Parliament about Mr Adani and asked some fundamental questions to the prime minister about his relationship with the businessman, about how Mr Adani had been given pretty much the entire India-Israel defence relationship, how he had been given the Mumbai airport and other airports, how rules were changed to allow him to be given these airports, what happened in Australia between the prime minister, Mr Adani, the State Bank of India’s chief and a chief minister of a state in Australia. (I asked) Why is the prime minister of India sitting with an SBI chairman and why, after the discussion, SBI pledged almost $1 billion to Mr Adani. What happened in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh?”
“I would like to go into the details with you. Unfortunately, I am a Member of Parliament and I am hopeful that I will be allowed to speak in Parliament. So I would like to first place my statement on the floor of the House and would be happy to discuss it with you after,” he said.
Rahul Gandhi had attended Parliament and sought time from Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to speak and defend himself. “His name was taken by BJP leaders inside the House. He told the speaker that he needed to defend himself and that he should be given time to speak,” said party leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
