HMP Berwyn: UK authorities fired 18 female guards and sent three of them to jail for having sexual relationships with inmates. Female staff members at Wrexham-based HMP Berwyn were allegedly intimate with the prisoners in the biggest jail in England and Wales. Some of them were even caught sending explicit photos, having sex in cells, and exchanging some raunchy phone calls.
Jennifer Gavan, 27, was jailed for eight months. She smuggled a mobile phone for her lover Alex Coxon, 25, so she could send photos of herself to him via Snapchat. She was caught kissing him during their relationship that went on from April to July 2020.
Staff became suspicious
Emily Watson was jailed for one year for performing a sex act on prisoner John McGee. Staff became suspicious and launched an investigation, leading to her arrest.
Ayshea Gunn, 27, was jailed for one year after having a fling with “dangerous” inmate Khuram Razaq, 29. She made numerous sexual phone calls to him, exchanged “highly sexualized” images, and smuggled in a pair of her knickers for the prisoner.
HMP Berwyn has 500 employees. They all are now given anti-corruption training to prevent flings with any of the 2,100 men locked up.
A spokesperson for the Prison Service said, “Our frontline staff are nothing short of heroes…it is for their sake we will never tolerate those few officers who think they are above the law.”
Cushiest prison in country
HMP Berwyn, located in Wrexham, Wales, has been dubbed “cushiest” prison in the UK. Its design and facilities have been criticised by some for being too luxurious and resembling a holiday camp rather than a prison.
Reports say the cells at HMP Berwyn are equipped with en-suite bathrooms, TVs, and laptops. Inmates can also attend workshops and use a dedicated health and wellbeing center.
The prison has been criticised for being too focused on rehabilitation and not on punishment. Some have argued that this approach may not be effective in deterring criminal behavior.
