Xi Jinping: Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to Russia next week, his first visit since Russia invaded Ukraine, according to reports. Citing Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying, Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Russia from March 20 to 22 at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. On Friday, the announcement was made.
President Putin invited Xi to visit the country in the spring
Interestingly, this will be Xi’s first abroad trip since being elected president for a third time earlier this month. The news comes only days after China was rumoured that Xi would travel to Russia to meet with his counterpart Vladimir Putin, who had invited him. President Putin, according to reports, has invited Xi to visit the country in the spring.
China and Russia signed a “no limits” cooperation
The visit comes at a time when Russia and Ukraine are fighting for Bakhmut, and the war appears to be far from over, despite the fact that it passed one year earlier this month. The US recently aroused eyebrows by claiming that China would ‘assist’ Russia against Ukraine, an allegation that Beijing categorically denied. Significantly, China has recently offered to act as a peace broker in Ukraine. But, the initiative has been positively received by Western nations, which have long been sceptical of China’s diplomatic connections with Russia. In February 2022, just weeks before Russia attacked Ukraine, China and Russia signed a “no limits” cooperation.
China has tried to remain neutral in the dispute
Earlier, Moscow acknowledged China’s proposal for a political solution to Ukraine’s crisis, but stated that the prerequisites for peace were not in place at the time. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked that Russia “gave a lot of attention to China’s offer”, but added that they “did not perceive any of the necessary circumstances for peace at this time”. While retaining tight ties with its partner Russia, China has tried to remain neutral in the dispute. China issued a 12-point statement proposing methods to resolve the war in Ukraine last week, which included respect for all countries’ territorial sovereignty.
