IPL 2023: In upcoming IPL auctions, players from Bangladesh may face a shadow ban due to their cricket boards’ behaviour. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has been particularly problematic, scheduling bilateral series during the IPL season. Only three Bangladeshi players will participate in this year’s IPL, including Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Das, and Mustafizur Rahman, and all three will be available only for certain periods of time i.e. April 9 to May 5 and then from 15 May onwards.
Players missing out on IPL 2023
The BCCI and franchises are unhappy with the BCB’s issuance of NOCs (No Objection Certificates) under these circumstances. Although the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has a reasonable justification for allowing their players to participate in IPL despite potential scheduling conflicts, as Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Das, and Mustafizur Rahman are important to their plans for the 2023 World Cup, the board still faces criticism.
This is because the players themselves were aware of the potential tournament overlap when they registered for the IPL 2023 Auction. Additionally, all four Sri Lankan players participating in IPL 16 will miss the tournament’s first week, as they will not be available until the conclusion of a tour of New Zealand on April 8th.
A franchise official anonymously said, “It is what it is. We can’t complain because it’s the BCCI that negotiates with other boards. But of course, franchises will be sceptical about picking players from certain countries. If you see, Taskin (Ahmed) did not get the NOC and now this. If they don’t want their players to play, they should not register. But, for sure, the perception about Bangladeshi players will change in future.”
BCCI looking forward for upcoming IPL
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is unhappy with the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s decision, but has not yet taken any action. The BCCI is adopting a wait-and-see approach, and franchises are likely to seek clarification from the BCB before the IPL 2024 auction. There is a possibility that all Bangladeshi players may be released before the next season, depending on the situation.
