The Delhi police has informed that the death of a farmer during the Republic Day violence was not caused by any gunshot. On January 26, farmers conducted a tractor rally in the national capital to show their dissent against the contentious farm laws that was passed by the Parliament in September last year. While farmers have planned for a peaceful protest, it soon turned violent with multiple gun shots being heard. A farmer whose tractor overturned during the rally died on the spot. While many were of the belief that he died due to the gunshot, Delhi police after carrying a thorough probe into the matter said that the farmer died due to shock and hemorrhage as a result of head injury.
The police was presenting their statement against a petition by deceased Navreet Singh’s grandfather seeking a probe into the death. In his petition, he had alleged that Navreet was allegedly shot by policemen due to which he lost control of the tractor.
“As per the opinion of the panel of doctors which conducted the post-mortem, the cause of death is shock and hemorrhage as a result of ante-mortem head injury. The death is not due to any gunshot injury,” the status report stated.
“The doctors did an X-ray before conducting the post-mortem. The X-Ray plates prima facie showed that there was no gunshot injury in the body of the deceased,” the police told the court.
The police further said that the doctors who conducted the post-mortem were medical experts and their morals can not be questioned.
