In 1975, Ramesh Sippy gave a unique film to Indian cinema called Naam Tha Sholay.
The banjara who sings this song in Sholay’s superhit song Mehbooba-Mehbooba was Jalal Agha. With this film, he got a new identity in the industry.
However, it was not that he had not acted in films before. Jalal Agha graduated from Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). He played Shahzade Salim i.e. Dilip Kumar’s childhood in the movie Mughal-e-Azam as a child.
Talking about a few selected films of Jalal Agha, these include the names of movies like ‘Yaadon Ki Baaraat’, ‘Julie’, ‘A little Bewafai’, ‘Saat Hindustani’, ‘Rocky’, ‘Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke’. Apart from this, he also worked in some Hollywood movies. Jalal Agha later also tried his hand in the field of script writing and direction.
Name is associated with hit songs-
There are some hit songs associated with Jalal Agha’s name. Kishore Kumar’s evergreen ‘Sama Hai Suhana Suhana’ (Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani) was filmed on him. Similarly ‘Mehbooba Mehbooba’ of ‘Sholay’ was filmed on Helen and her. His work in this film was limited to this song.
Directing ‘Nirvana’ and ‘Nugget’-
Jalal Agha also tried himself under direction.
‘Nirvana’ (1983) was his first directorial film. Amol Palekar, Sarika and Tinu Anand played important roles in it. He later composed ‘Goonj’ (1989) with Juhi Chawla, Kumar Gaurav and Biju Ali. Both the out-of-the-box films were a loss deal.
