Delhi weather: The month of May has begun with rain and thundershowers in Delhi, bringing down the bringing sharply. As the temperature fell, Delhi witnessed second coolest day of the month since 2010. The maximum temperature recorded at Safdarjung on Monday was 26.1 degrees, which was also the lowest since mid-March this year.
The India Meteorological Department has predicted the rainfall will continue in Delhi for the next two to three days accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Rainfall to continue for two more days
MeT officials said the rainfall is caused by western disturbances and is likely to continue for the next two to three days. Dr Naresh Kumar, IMD’s Senior Scientist said a three-day orange alert for rainfall has been issued for almost the entirety of North India.
The weatherman forecast a generally cloudy sky along with light rain or thundershowers along with gusty winds on Tuesday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to settle around 27 degrees Celsius and 19 degrees Celsius.
“We expect light to very light rainfall at a few places on Tuesday while the intensity of rain activity will increase on Wednesday with thundershowers. Rainfall will thereafter decline although the conditions may remain overcast till at least May 4. Temperatures will begin to rise gradually after May 4,” said Kuldeep Srivastava, a weather scientist at IMD.
Better air quality
According to the weather department, hailstorm activity is likely to lash Delhi and its neighbouring states in the next few days. The showers improved the air quality and brought down the mercury in Delhi. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was 86 as compared to 132 a day earlier. However, it also caused waterlogging and traffic woes in several areas. Residents in Delhi had to wade through knee-deep water to get to their destinations.
MCD officials said waterlogging was reported at seven places, including in Lajpat Nagar. In Shadra’s Shiv Vihar, a portion of a wall collapsed.
