Kerala: The high court today declared the houseboat disaster in Kerala’s Malappuram district to be “shocking” and “haunting” while launching a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on its own to investigate the tragedy, which has claimed 22 lives.
The search and rescue operation is still ongoing despite the discovery of 22 bodies
This morning, according to news agency PTI, the court declared that it “will not allow the tragedy to be forgotten.” The district collector has been instructed by the high court to submit a report by May 12. The state government was criticised by the court, which also questioned why officials previously found to be at fault for boat accidents had not been punished. On Sunday evening at around 7.30 p.m. in Tanur, Malappuram, a crowded houseboat capsized near an estuary close to Thoovaltheeram beach. The search and rescue operation is still ongoing despite the discovery of 22 bodies so far. According to district officials, 15 of the victims are children, with the youngest being around eight months old. According to the investigation so far, the accident was caused by crowding. Although 40 tickets were sold, according to the authorities, it’s probable that there were more people on the houseboat when it capsized.

Other obvious mistakes that may have contributed to the catastrophe have also been exposed in the wake of the occurrence. According to reports, the recreational double-decker boat lacked a fitness certificate. Additionally, the houseboat was reportedly functioning after dusk in contravention of rules. The purpose of the PIL that the court filed is to learn why the authorities permitted the ship to operate against the law.The bodies of the children caused the Justices Devan Ramachandran and Shoba Annamma Eapen’s bench to express that their “hearts were bleeding” and they “underwent sleepless nights” after witnessing them. According to the court, “the deadly cocktail of callousness, greed, and official apathy” was to blame for the catastrophe. According to the court, the PIL was started to make sure that a similar incidence wouldn’t happen again.
