It’s been more than 3 years since the ball-tampering gate of former Australian captain Steven Smith and his two other players. The three players were also banned from the international cricket a year but the David Warner and Steven Smith have come back stronger in all the formats for the Australian cricket.
Meanwhile, Aaron Finch and Tim Paine were given the role of captaincy for the Australian cricket team in limited over format and in Test format respectively. Finch has done well captaining the Australian side in ODI format but the questions are still on Test captain Tim Paine who has just lost the home Test series againt India where Australian team never showed a character to be in the game in last two games.
Steven Smith has once again expressed his desire to be the leader of his national side.
“I’ve certainly had a lot of time to think about it and I guess now I’ve got to a point where if the opportunity did come up again, I would be keen,” Smith told News Corp.
“If it was what Cricket Australia wanted and it was what was best for the team at the time, it’s certainly something I would be interested in now, that’s for sure.”
Paine has led the Australian side in Test cricket and in the initial phase of his captaincy in Test he got the series Ashes, a series win against New Zealand and Pakistan but later Rahane and company have completely destroyed the Australian playing lineup.
“I’m always going to have to live with Cape Town regardless of whether I lead again or not. It’s always there,” Smith said. “I’ve been through all that now.
“Time keeps moving forward, and I’ve learnt so much the last few years about myself and grown as a human being. I feel as though I’d be in a better place if the opportunity did come up.
“If it doesn’t, that’s fine as well and I’d support whoever is in charge the same way I’ve supported Tim and Finchy. I haven’t always felt like I wanted to do it again. That’s only come in the last little bit.”
