Uttam Singh: Four of the team’s players were from the state, which delighted sports fans after India’s junior men’s hockey team defeated Pakistan 2-1 on Thursday to win the title for the fourth time. Team India captain Uttam Singh, who trained at the Karampur village stadium in the Ghazipur area, spoke to TOI from Salalah in Oman and said, “We did not lose a single match at the Junior Asia Cup.”
Uttam Singh Reflects on India’s Dominant Performance
‘In the entire tournament, we scored 50 goals while drawing one game against Pakistan. The game is significantly more interesting and the stakes are bigger when India is playing Pakistan. For us, it was a matter of life or death,’ he said. ‘I spoke to my brother before the game and learned that there was a great deal of excitement surrounding the match in India. We had made the decision to play aggressively before we left for the tournament. For us, the method was successful,’ according to Singh. He mentioned several players who played well, including Salman Aithesham and Shahid Abdul. When asked about his connection to Karampur Stadium, Singh said: ‘Most hockey players come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and that moment gives them goosebumps when they compete in a big event. The entire globe is aware that I’m from Karampur today. The hockey training facility, which was established in Karampur village in 1984 on a minor scale, has received the designation of hockey academy under Hockey India.’
Nurturing Hockey Talents and Fueling Dreams of National Success
Many national and international hockey players have come from this stadium. ‘I would like to offer my family, Tej Bahadur Singh (who built the training facility’s foundation), and my trainers the credit for my trip.’ He added that his next goal would be the Junior World Cup. ‘Recently, 12 hockey players developed by Karampur stadium were picked in the Uttar Pradesh police,’ he said. Amir Ali, Shardanand Tewari, and Vishnukant, three additional state players, also expressed delight over their accomplishment.
