A soldier of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), who was captured by the Maoists in Chhattisgarh after April 3 gunfight, was released on Thursday.
Rakeshwar Singh Manhas, a commando with CRPF’s CoBRA unit, was released deep in the jungle and was brought to the Terrem camp.
“It was an unconditional release. The abducted CRPF’s CoBRA battalion commando was handed over to social worker Dharamlal Saini and tribal community leader Telam Boraiya, who were the emissaries for his release”, official sources confirmed.
Manhas is currently at the Basaguda police station.
Meanwhile, Singh’s wife Meenu said that she has received official communication, adding that the CRPF commando is in good health.
“Today is the happiest day of my life. I always remained hopeful of his return. I thank the government,” she said while speaking to news agency ANI.
According to the police, ten weapons, including seven AK-47 rifles, two SLR rifles and one Light Machine Gun (LMG), of the security personnel went missing after the attack
On Tuesday, the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) had released an open letter in which it had confirmed that Singh was in their custody and had asked the central and state governments to name mediators for his release. However, the Maoists didn’t raise any formal demands for the release of Singh.
