In a long-awaited development, the Kanwar Corridor project is finally set to begin after a five-year delay, offering a sigh of relief to millions of devotees across the region. The ambitious project, aimed at facilitating the annual pilgrimage of Lord Shiva’s devotees, had faced numerous challenges and bureaucratic hurdles since its initial announcement.
Kanwar corridor is set to begin now
The public works department has identified over 200 hectares of land in Lalitpur district for compulsory afforestation. This means that the department plans to use this land for planting trees and creating a forested area.
In 2018, the state government proposed a route along the Upper Ganga canal. This route seems to have multiple purposes, including facilitating a yatra (a pilgrimage or religious journey) and providing farmers from western UP districts with an additional route to access mandis (wholesale markets) and mills.
In 2020, the project received approval from the state government’s expenditure and finance committee, but it faced a delay due to the environment and forest ministry’s clearance. It appears that the project required environmental clearance from the ministry before proceeding further.
The Kanwar Corridor, a proposed route spanning several states, seeks to provide a dedicated pathway for Kanwariyas (pilgrims) to undertake their arduous journey. The 111km kanwar route from Ghaziabad to Muzaffarnagar is one of the chief minister’s pet projects.
The corridor will feature essential amenities such as rest areas, medical facilities, and sanitation provisions to ensure the well-being of the pilgrims throughout their pilgrimage.
