Manipur Violence: The Supreme Court has declined Manipur Tribal Forum’s Plea regarding protection of the Kuki tribe by the Indian Army. As per ANI, the matter for hearing has been pushed to July 3 by the SC stating, it’s purely an issue of law and order and central government agencies are working on the ground to control the matter. Manipur Tribal Forum had sought protection of the Kuki tribe by the Indian Army in its plea to Supreme Court. The Manipur Tribal Forum has alleged that both central government and CM N Biren Singh of Manipur have flared up a communal agenda for “ethnic cleansing” of Kuki tribals. More than 100 people have lost their lives in the violence between Meitei and Kuki communities that started at the beginning of last month.
The conflict in Manipur
Clashes between the two communities first broke out in the state on May 3 after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organized in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Chief Minister N Biren Singh has appealed to the people to maintain peace and urged not to take up violence until normalcy can be restored. During a press conference CM stated “I appeal to the people who are with arms not to attack anything. Please maintain peace so that we can resource normalcy in the state”, as quoted by ANI. On Monday, CM N Biren Singh visited some relief camps and assured that the state government has planned construction of prefabricated houses to accommodate the people.
