Emmanuel Macron: French President Emmanuel Macron has sparked a ‘drinking debate’ after being seen downing beer in a rugby team’s locker room, reports The Guardian.
A video footage shows the 45-year-old French President being handed a bottle of Corona beer. He is also shown being challenged to down the beer in one go. The footage shows Macron accepting the challenge and gulping the beer in just 17 seconds.
After he finishes his beer, Macron proudly slams the beer bottle down on the table.
This incident happened in the Toulouse changing room after the team beat La Rochelle in Paris on Saturday.
Macron’s beer-guzzling feat sparked a political storm on“binge drinking and accusations of toxic masculinity.”

Green Party’s MP Sandrine Rousseau tweeted, “Toxic masculinity in political leadership in one image.”
“Sharing in the joy”
Rousseau’s tweet was replied to by Jean-René Cazeneuve, an MP from Macron’s Centrist Party. He said, “A president who is sharing in the joy of 23 players and taking part in their traditions. That’s all.”

Macron’s choice-in this case Corona- has sparked a controversy about whether the French President is courting the Right. Former French President, Jacques Chirac, who represented the French Right, favoured beer over other beverages.
Many political observers also think that Macron is trying to prove that he is a man of the masses by downing the beer he was handed over.
The Guardian reports that last March during the pension crisis when Macron was shown drinking beer, people accused him of being out of touch with ordinary people.
“Binge drinking is a problem”
French newspaper Liberation recalled that in 2018 Macron had criticized binge drinking. The paper recalled Macron having said that binge-drinking causes health problems “when young people get drunk at high-speed with strong alcohol or beer”.
