PM Modi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi repeated his “It’s not an ear for war” comment during his address to the US Congress. Amid applause from his audience, he said, “This is not an era of war but of dialogue and diplomacy.”
PM Modi also said, “We all must do what we can to stop bloodshed and human suffering.”
Mr Modi’s remarks came hours after he said in a news conference that India is ready to “contribute in any way it can to restore peace in Ukraine.” The news conference was also addressed by US President Joe Biden.
President Biden while addressing the news conference said that “the two leaders talked about their shared efforts to mitigate the humanitarian tragedies unleashed by Russia’s brutal war in Ukraine and to defend the core principles of the UN Charter on sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
Mr Modi has met Russian and Ukrainian leaders several times and appealed for peace. He had also told President Putin that “It’s not an era for war.”

No condemnation of Russia
PM Modi didn’t condemn Russia while addressing the US Congress or during the press conference. Many observers expected President Joe Biden to pressurize India to criticize Putin for the Ukraine War.
It is noteworthy that India buys oil at discounted prices from Russia. Moscow also supplies critical arms and spare parts to New Delhi.
The China angle
Geopolitical experts say the US can’t pressurize India because of the China threat. India has stood up to Beijing’s aggressive postures in Ladakh for many years now.
The United States considers India as a valuable ally against China. New Delhi and Washington, along with Japan and Australia, form QUAD which is a sort of defensive tie-up against China in the Indo-Pacific region.
