Titan submersible: After the ‘catastrophic implosion’ of Titan submersible, US investor Jay Bloom revealed that he had turned turned down invitation to join the expedition in the last minute. Stockton Rush, the submersible operator and CEO of OeanGate who died in the fateful accident, had tried to convince Bloom to join the expedition to RMS Titanic wreck for more than a year. He had invited Jay Bloom and his son Sean to purchase tickets for the final expedition of the season but was turned down. The seats eventually went to British Pakistani billionaire Shehzada Dawood and his son Suleman.
Bloom had concerns around safety of Titan
Jay Bloom revealed that more he read about the expedition the more concerned he grew about the safety of expedition. He declined the last minute chance to board the submersible citing a scheduling conflict. “Every time I see a picture of that Pakistani businessman and his 19-year-old son, I think how easily that could have been me and my 20-year-old son – but for the grace of God,” Bloom said. Bloom’s son Sean had always been fascinated by the lore of RMS Titanic as a child. Jay Bloom grew particularly concerned about Stockton’s use of consumer-grade parts in the submersible which included use of video game joystick to control the vessel. He was amazed that one could not open Titan from inside even in case of emergency and had limitations surrounding submersible’s body being made out of novel carbon-fiber.

Safety concerns around submersible were raised in 2018
Bloom also revealed that how the motorcycle accident and eventual death of his close friend, actor Treat Williams less than two weeks ago reminded him about the important things in life. A former employ of Rush and industry experts had raised concerns around the safety of Titan as far back as 2018. Rush had dismissed the notion of trip being unsafe in a series of texts between Rush and Bloom “While there’s obviously risk, it’s way safer than flying in a helicopter or even scuba diving,”Rush wrote. The texts were revealed by Bloom following the confirmation of deaths. Rush also asserted that no one had even been hurt aboard a non-military sub in 35 years in the text conversation with Bloom.
