Titan submersible: On Sunday, U.S. Coast Guard said Sunday it is going to lead the investigation into sudden implosion of Titan submersible that claimed lives of five people on a voyage to wreck of RMS Titanic. The chief investigator Capt. Jason Neubauer has said that the accident site has been mapped and operations of sea floor salvaging in undergoing. According to U.S. Coast Guard Neubauer the highest level of investigation is being conducted. Meanwhile the US Coast Guard body can make recommendations to prosecutors for purpose of pursuing civil or criminal sanctions. OceanGate Expeditions the company that owned and operated the Titan submersible is based in America but the Titan unit itself was registered in Caribbean nation of Bahamas. Meanwhile Titan’s mother ship, the Polar Prince is based in Canada and citizens who lost their lives were from England, Pakistan, France and the U.S. The deep sea is not regulated even by International Law and there will be several difficulties as investigation proceeds further.
International cooperation in Investigation
US Coast Guard Neubauer has stated that investigators are working closely with other national and international investigative authorities which include the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, Canada’s Transportation Safety Board , France’s marine casualties investigation board and the United Kingdom Marine Accident Investigation Branch. The evidence is being collected at St. John’s port in Newfoundland in close collaboration with Canadian authorities. “My primary goal is to prevent a similar occurrence by making the necessary recommendations to advance the safety of the maritime domain worldwide,” Neubauer added. On Thursday, U.S. Coast Guard had reported that debris from the submersible had been found roughly 1,488 meters away from the hull of Titanic in waters of North Atlantic Ocean. The debris was located about 3,810 meters underwater.

Mapping the Debris
A US Navy official told The Associated Press, “Efforts are focused on helping map the debris field in preparation for recovery efforts and to support investigative actions. Efforts to mobilize equipment such as the Flyaway Deep Ocean Salvage System have been discontinued.” The Flyaway Deep Ocean Salvage System is a portable ship lifting mechanism that is designed to carry up to 60,000 pounds from deep ocean. It is used to recovery heavy sunken objects of considerable weights including aircraft and small vessels. The titan submersible weighed around 20,000 pounds.
Transportation Safety Board of Canada’s Kathy Fox has stated “We are conducting a safety investigation in Canada given that this was a Canadian-flagged vessel that departed a Canadian port and was involved in this occurrence, albeit in international waters.” She further added that investigation findings will be shred in accordance with Canadian Law similar to U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and the U.S. Coast Guard of United Sates of America.
