Chandrashekhar Azad, the head of the Bhim Army, was shot at on Wednesday (June 28) in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, by unidentified gunmen. On Thursday, police detained four persons in connection with the incident. The car that the shooters used to carry out the attack has also been found by the Saharanpur Police. After his attackers fired four rounds at his convoy, Azad was struck by a bullet shell.
Details of the Incident and Azad’s Condition
When the attack occurred, Chandrashekhar Azad was riding in a Toyota Fortuner with four other people. There was also his brother in the car. The attackers’ rounds succeeded in penetrating the car’s passenger seat. In the assault, the back glass of the car was also broken. Chandrashekhar Azad’s vehicle was shot at repeatedly from behind by the armed assailants who arrived in a white Maruti Swift Dzire with a Haryana licence plate. Azad suffered minor injuries, and the bullet barely missed him. He was admitted to Saharanpur’s Deoband Hospital. The leader of the Bhim Army told the ANI news agency that although he could not clearly recall his assailants, those who were travelling with him could. While Azad was travelling from Delhi, he was attacked. According to a report by news agency PTI, he had gone to a supporter’s house to participate in a ‘terhavi’ rite.
Samajwadi Party Condemns Attack on Chandrashekhar Azad
In response to the assault on Chandrasekhar Azad, Samajwadi Party officials claimed that “jungle raj” was in full effect in Uttar Pradesh and that criminals no longer fear the state. The attack by “criminals protected by power is a highly condemnable and cowardly act,” according to party leader Akhilesh Yadav.
Shivpal Singh Yadav Raises Concerns over Safety of Opposition in UP
Shivpal Singh Yadav, the head of the Samajwadi Party, stated that “the opposition in UP is now the target of both the government and the criminals,” implying that the attack on Azad was a part of a bigger assault on opposition figures in the state. The fatal assault on Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekhar is a warning sign for the state’s weak law and order condition. According to a senior police officer, the incident will be looked into by the authorities, and the perpetrators will face the appropriate consequences.
