LGBTQ Rights: Florida governor Ron DeSantis came under fire on Friday for his campaign video that showed his rival Donald Trump’s previous promise to protect LGBTQ rights.
The Florida governor’s campaign team posted a video with the caption, “To wrap up ‘Pride Month,’ let’s hear from the politician who did more than any other Republican to celebrate it…” This video showed Donald Trump as “sympathetic towards transgender rights,” according to CNN.
A clip in this video features Trump saying, “I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens.”
CNN says DeSantis’ video also shows Trump allowing Catelyn Jenner to use any bathroom of her choice at Trump Tower and including transgender women in the Miss Universe contest, which the former president initially owned.
The same video highlights the anti-LGBTQ measures that the Florida governor has instituted in his state.
The former president has vowed to curtail LGBTQ rights and stop gender-affirming surgery for minors, should he return to the White House next year.
“Desperate campaign”
An official from Trump’s campaign team termed the video as “a desperate campaign in its last throes of relevancy.” Various polls show that the former president is ahead of Ron DeSantis for the Republican nomination.
Meanwhile, a group of Republicans who support LGBTQ rights slammed the video. Log Cabin Republicans said the DeSantis video was “divisive and desperate.”
The group in a statement said, “Ron DeSantis’ extreme rhetoric has just ventured into homophobic territory.”
“Divisive and pandering”
In response to the online criticism of the video, Christina Pushaw said that Pride Month was “unnecessary, divisive, pandering.” The DeSantis video came on the last day of Pride Month.
Pushaw works with the Florida governor’s campaign team.
CNN says DeSantis is pushing to make himself a stronger Republican candidate.
