Wagner: Russian government has clamped down on internet outlets and blocked “troll factory” associated with Wagner chief Yevgney Prigozhin. Russia has blocked access to five media outlets that include Neva News, Ria Fan, Economy Today, Politics Today and People’s News. Priogozhin led a mutiny against Russian administration and later negotiated peace with Kremlin and went to exile in Belarus.
‘Patriot’ shut down
Among internet based outlets associated with Wagner, Patriot included the Internet Research Agency, Ria Fan news site and troll farm. The latter was associated with Russian meddling in US elections. There are reports that Prigozhin himself ordered the shut down of Patriot.
These developments have unfolded following Russia’s conclusion of investigation regarding events of armed rebellion by Wagner.
On Friday, it was announced that country’s communications watchdog Roskomnadzor had blocked media outlets linked to Prigozhin.
RIA FAN director Yevgeny Zubarev has said that The Patriot Group worked “against Alexei Navalny and other representatives of the opposition who genuinely tried to destroy our country.”
Dealing with aftermath of rebellion
Russia is attempting to put the crisis of rebellion behind it. The government has dropped charges against the group and has also disarmed the group fighters. It increasingly appears that Russia does not necessarily wants to talk about the events surrounding Wagner’s mutiny. The mutiny was seen as biggest challenge ever put to Putin’s rule in Russia and spilling from Ukraine war in its own territory is a deep concern for the Russian administration.
