In a major relief to the people of Punjab, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday closed the Singhawala toll plaza near Chandpurana village on the Moga-Kotkapura road. Singhawala toll plaza made free
Talking to reporters after the closure of the Singhawala toll plaza, Bhagwant Mann said that the closure of the toll has brought great economic relief to the people. People had to pay around Rs 4.68 lakh toll everyday at Singhawala toll plaza. Now people’s money will be saved. He described the toll plazas as shops looting the common people and said that a lot of agreements made with the government in this regard were flouted. It is surprising that instead of taking any action against the toll managers in the interest of the people, the previous governments gave protection to them.
Due to the efforts of AAP government, now the 10th toll plaza in Punjab is closed. Toll Plaza
The Chief Minister said that people elect governments to protect their interests, but blind politicians in power have made such defaulters a shield only for their own interests. The previous governments gave permission to these toll plazas to collect money illegally without caring for the common people. He said that despite arrangement in the agreement at any of the toll plazas that have been closed so far, the facility of ambulance or recovery van was not visible.
Mann said that the agreement of Singhawala toll plaza was signed on September 25, 2006 during the time of Captain Government and toll was imposed for sixteen and a half years. The company was fined Rs 2.48 crore for the delay of 158 days in the work of tarring the road for the first time, but the fine was never recovered by the then government. As per the agreement, this toll could be closed on 10th November, 2019.
