Manipur Violence: A woman was allegedly shot and killed by unidentified criminals outside a school in Imphal West on Thursday, according to sources, only a day after classes resumed across Manipur. Police sources stated that the victim’s identify and community have not yet been determined. Sources claim that the incident happened in front of Shishu Nishtha Niketan School. The event has created fear in the community where schools just reopened yesterday.
Altercation between Armed Groups and Mob Attack Leave Ronaldo Dead and Several Injured in Manipur
There have been ethnic tensions in the state for more than two months at the time of the incident. Security personnel broke up an altercation between two armed groups from the Mapao and Awang Sekmai regions earlier in the day in the Kangpokpi district, according to PTI. A mob in the Thoubal district set fire to the home of an Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) member after he stopped rioters from stealing weapons from the police armoury, according to officials on Wednesday. This was another violent event. Ronaldo, a 27-year-old guy, was badly hurt in the tragic altercation and eventually passed away while being transported to an Imphal hospital. Ten more people were hurt during the altercation, with six of them getting medical treatment for serious injuries.
Manipur Government Continues Shutdown Amid Ongoing Violence and ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ Protests
The Manipur government said on Wednesday that it had prolonged the suspension of internet services in the state for an additional five days, till 3 p.m. on July 10, “to prevent any disturbance of peace and public order” despite no signs of the violence abating. On May 3, when fighting between ethnic communities started, the police for the first time shut down internet access throughout the northeastern state. It occasionally gets extended. ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ protests against the Meitei community’s desire for Scheduled Tribe (ST) designation were held in the hill regions on May 3 when violence first erupted in the state. More than 100 people have already passed away, another hundred have been injured, and thousands more are finding refuge in rescue camps. The majority of Meiteis, who make up around 53% of Manipur’s population, reside in the Imphal Valley. Another 40% of the population is made up of tribal Nagas and Kukis, who live in the hill districts.
