MCD: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi will continue to maintain roadways wider than 60 feet. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) council members had supported a plan to outsource the maintenance despite strong opposition from the BJP during the MCD’s House meeting.
MCD to maintain cleaning and sweeping of roads
The use of a water sprinkler machine integrated with anti-smoke cannons and motorised road sweepers to control pollution on the highways has been proposed in the meeting. An official familiar with the matter said the decision to keep the cleaning and sweeping of roads with MCD was taken during a joint meeting. “To ensure no compromise is made in the quality of work, it was decided to increase the fleet vehicles and equipment,” he added
The civic organisation currently has 52 mechanical road sweepers in its fleet, and 70 more are set to be added. According to a source, “the number of water sprinklers and anti-smog vehicles will be increased for washing of footpaths and mitigating dust pollution.”
“The consultant will also prepare a request for proposal and the project will be allotted for a period of 10 years to the concessionaire,” said an official.
MCD exploring options
Seven companies have submitted expressions of interest for the mechanical sweeping and cleaning of roads less than 60 feet, including back lanes, market streets, pavements, and centre verges in rural areas. MCD officials claimed that due to the size of the machines, such regions cannot be cleared by the mechanical road sweepers now in use.
“On June 30, interested companies were invited to a meeting and requested to go on field trips. Senior MCD officials will get a demonstration from these companies, after which a decision will be made. For cleaning smaller roads, we may need a different set of tools, the official stated.
