UN: On Tuesday, the global Multidimensional Poverty Index was released by UNDP, HDI and Oxford Poverty at the University of Oxford. The report stated that between the years of 2005-06 to 2019-21, India uplifted 415 million people out of poverty line.
As pert the report, 25 counties that includes India has successfully slashed their global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) value by half. The list includes nations like China, Indonesia, Vietnam Cambodia, Morocco, Honduras, Serbia and Congo.
“Notably, India saw a remarkable reduction in poverty, with 415 million people exiting poverty within a span of just 15 years (2005/6–19/21),” the report said. The report demonstates that massive poverty programmes can be undertaken and they actually work.
Decline in Multidimensional poverty
Lack of comprehensible data during COVID-19 prevents generation of data assessing immediate trends but a lot can be seen with the figures available. In 2005-06 more than 64 crore people lived in multidimensional poverty which was reduced to 28 crores in 2019-21. As per the report “the poorest states and groups, including children and people in disadvantaged caste groups, had the fastest absolute progress.”
The multidimensional poor and malnourished people in India declined from 44.3 % in 2005-06 to 11.8 % in 2019-21. The child mortality rate also dropped from 4.5% to 1.5%.
Multidimensional Poverty Index
All the countries who reduced their global MPI value by half had incidence under 25% compared to India and Congo who had starting incidence above 50%. According to the report nearly 5 out 6 people living in multidimensional poverty in the world reside in South Asia and Sub-Sharan Africa.
The countries who have reduced their MPI substantially prove that SDGs-2030 over poverty reduction can be achieved by the putting in the effort.
“As we reach the mid-point of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, we can clearly see that there was steady progress in multidimensional poverty reduction before the pandemic,” the Director of the Human Development Report Office, Pedro Conceição, said.
