Tomato price: The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) and National Cooperative Consumers Federation (NCCF) have been ordered by the Department of Consumer Affairs to immediately purchase tomatoes from mandis in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra for simultaneous distribution in major consumption centres where retail prices have increased dramatically in the past month. According to information provided by the government, the cost of tomatoes has increased by 326.13% during the past month.
Tomatoes to Hit Delhi-NCR Retail Outlets at Reduced Prices by Friday
By this Friday, the department said in a release, the purchased food will be offered to customers in the Delhi-NCR region at reduced costs through retail outlets. “The targeted centres for release have been identified on the basis of absolute increase in retail prices over the past one month in centres where prevailing prices are above the All-India average. Key consumption centres in states having higher concentration of the identified centres are further selected for the intervention,” it added.
Tomato supply and price situation in Delhi-NCR and other states
However, the majority of the tomatoes that are currently available in the Delhi-NCR region come from Kolar in Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh. Tomatoes are currently arriving in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and a few other states, with Satara, Narayangaon, and Nashik being the main sources. This is projected to continue till the end of this month. To fulfil the increasing demand, there are still consistent arrivals in a manageable amount at Madanapalle (Chittoor) in Andhra Pradesh. While supplies from Madhya Pradesh is anticipated to begin in August, additional supply is anticipated to come from the Narayangaon and Aurangabad belt of Maharashtra. “Prices are anticipated to cool down in the near future, accordingly,” the release further said. Tomatoes were being sold for an average retail price of 108.92 per kg as of July 11.
