Yamuna water level: The rise in water level in Yamuna river brought life to a standstill in Delhi, with flooding in low-lying areas. The authorities have ordered the closure of all schools and universities in the capital until July 16, with the government carrying out the rescue work.
Yamuna water level stable
A top Central Water Commission official said on Thursday night that the Yamuna water level had steadied and had begun to fall. However, it still remains close to the danger mark. The Yamuna water level at Old Railway Bridge (ORB) was 208.38 metres at 10 a.m. today, according to news agency ANI.
IMD predicts more rainfall
On Friday, the India Meteorological Department issued a rain notice for Delhi and the surrounding areas, predicting a moderate drizzle that could become more intense over the course of the next 24 hours. A further intense rainstorm might make the already dire situation in the city even worse. On Saturday, a moderate amount of rain or thundershowers are expected.
The Yamuna has been flowing above the danger mark in Delhi for the previous four days after heavy rainfall for three consecutive days and water release from Haryana’s Hathnikund barrage. Over the previous two days, the overflowing river converted parks into flooded mazes, homes and shelters into submerged kingdoms, and streets into raging streams.
LG VK Saxena and AAP’s Atishi visit affected areas
On Friday morning, Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena and Minister Atishi & Saurabh Bharadwaj inspect the spot at Vikas Bhawan, ITO where a drain regulator is damaged.
Other places that experienced flooding were the main Outer Ring Road near the Red Fort, Vishwakarma Colony, Yamuna Bazar, the ISBT bus terminus, Kashmere Gate, Shankaracharya Road, Majnu Ka Tila, Batla House, Kirari, and Kingsway Camp.
CM Kejriwal seeks help from ARMY
To assist the government in its rescue attempts, twelve National Disaster Response Force teams with inflatable boats, ropes, and other equipment have been dispatched in Delhi. So far, more than 20,000 people have been relocated to relief camps. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has also requested ARMY for its help.
L-G Saxena called an emergency meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). “All schools, colleges, and universities are being closed until Sunday,” CM Kejriwal stated after the meeting. He added that private offices are expected to adopt the work-from-home policy.
