Seema Ghulam Haider, the Pakistani woman who fled the her country to stay with her love Sachin Kumar in India is no longer welcomed by neighbours and a relative. Seema befriended Sachin when that met via online game PUBG and were drawn closer to each other. Upon her arrival in India with her four children, she had wanted to marry Sachin. The lawyer who was approached by the couple for marriage informed the authorities about Seema.
The couple along with Sachin’s father were arrested by the police. On July 4. the couple made a public confession about their love and desire to stay together. The court in Greater Noida granted bail to the couple and Sachin’s father and they made their way out of Luksar Jail in Gautam Budh Nagar.
‘She can stay there’
The act of defiance by making her way to India for her love might have garnered Seema widespread support but everyone is not happy. Seema’s neighbours and relatives have ostracised her for defying the conservative norms of their society. The 16 year old son of Semma’s landlord in Karachi has stated “She should just send her children back to Pakistan. She can stay there. Now she is no longer even a Muslim. She was a tenant with us for three years with her children. She lived alone with her children. Her father-in-law lives some distance away from here.”
Seema had earlier said she has chosen to adopt her lover’s religion and culture as her own anmd changed the names of her four children as well. She further added Sachin’s parents have also accepted me, and I have adopted all their cultural practices and will continue to live with them.”
Seema’s husband Ghulam Haider had left her to work in Saudi Arabia.
Threats issued
Seema was a resident of Bhittai Abad Katchi Abadis in Gulistan-e-Jauhar locality of Karachi. She belongs to a tribal background and had fled to Karachi to marry Ghulam Haider against her parents wishes. A member of Semma’s tribe has stated that she should stay in India and it will be best for everyone. “If ever she thinks of coming back, she will not be forgiven by the tribe and secondly her decision to stay with a Hindu has angered everyone now,” he further added.
Mian Mithoo, a religious leader from rural Sindh had issued a open threat of punishment to Semma if she returns to Pakistan. His supporters made threats to local Hindu places of worship but police has assured safety to members of Hindu and Sikh community.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has expressed concern over communal attacks against places of minority worship. The Sindh Home Department has been instructed to undertake investigation on this matter.
The couple cites Bollywood film Gadar (2001) as their inspiration.
