On Tuesday, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ Veer Savarkar International Airport’s new integrated terminal building, or NITB, was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The ceremony was attended by key authorities, including general (retd) VK Singh, the Union minister of state for road, transport and highways, and Jyotiraditya Scindia, the minister of civil aviation.
The terminal building’s shell-like shape reflects the island’s environment. Through roof-mounted skylights, the entire terminal will enjoy 100% natural lighting for 12 hours each day.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) built the NITB for an estimated cost of 707.73 crore in response to a spike in passenger traffic.
The new terminal building will have a total built-up area of 40,837 square metres and the potential to accommodate 1,200 people during peak hours and roughly 40 lakh passengers yearly.
The three-story structure will have four conveyor belts, three passenger boarding bridges, and 28 check-in counters.
