Cyber Attacks: A cyber security research firm has revealed that an Indian company faced approximately 2,146 cyber attacks per week in the last six months. This translates to nearly 50,000 cyber attacks since the year began. CheckPoint’s ‘Threat Intelligence Report 2023’ also said that on an average any organization faces 1,200 cyber attacks in one year.
Most attacks in healthcare sector
Companies belonging to the healthcare sector (4,800) faced the maximum attacks, followed by education and research (3,532), government/military (3,017), and insurance/legal (2,523). The report says globally there was an 8% surge in global weekly cyberattacks in 2023 Q2. Furthermore, the education and research sectors experienced the maximum cyber attacks on a weekly basis. It also said that Africa and APAC faced the highest annual increase in weekly attacks per organization. “While the disruptive impact of the Russian–Ukrainian conflict on the cyber landscape has relatively reduced in recent months, the threat landscape has returned to a state of ‘normality.’ This new normal is characterized by an increase in cyberattacks,” CheckPoint emphasized. It further said that the persistence of these threats (cyber attacks) highlights the importance of staying vigilant at all times. Every company must be prepared for one or more attacks on its digital assets, CheckPoint elaborated in its report. Cyber criminals have also been using AI tools like ChatGPT4 to cheat people. Using this disruptive technology, criminals deploy virtual assistants and defraud people with millions of dollars, the report says.
Fewer ransomware attacks
Significantly, organizations have reported fewer ransomware attacks in 2023 compared to last year. The CheckPoint report noted there has been a decline of 9% in ransomware cases in 2023 Q2. In this period, one of 44 companies reported ransomware incidents. However, APAC and Europe reported an increase in ransomware attacks per organization on a year-to-year basis.
