Huge waves hit Mumbai’s Marine Drive on July 19 amid incessant rainfall in Mumbai and its neighbouring areas. Pictures and videos of the destruction caused have surfaced on the internet which shows mayhem caused by the rain with uprooted trees and walls collapsing.
IMD issues orange alert in Mumbai
Amid the heavy downpour, the Indian Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and its suburbs. An orange alert has also been issued for Raigad and Palgarh districts. Sindhduurg, Nandurbar, Dhule, Jalgaon, Sambhajinagar, Ahmednagar, Pune, Nasik, Solapur and Beed districts are also expected to witness more rainfall, as per IMD.
Holiday in many schools in Palghar
Amid heavy rainfall in parts of Maharashtra, the Collector of Palghar district has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in the district on July 20.
Local transportation affected
Mumbai and its suburbs received heavy rainfall in the past two days. Suburban services of the Central Railway have also been affected by the heavy rains, coupled with the failure of an express train engine during the morning rush hours. Heavy rains lashed Bandra, Dahisar, Chembur, Fort, Matunga, Byculla and other areas during the night. Local trains are reportedly running 20-25 minutes late.
According to BMC’s Automatic Weather Stations (AWS), a rainfall of 25 mm was recorded in Mumbai between 8 am to 12 pm today. In western and eastern suburbs, rainfall of 20.6 mm and 17.75 mm were reported, respectively, as per the civic body.
Rain alert in Himachal, Uttarakhand
The IMD has also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Himachal and Uttarakhand in the next 24 hours. The two mountain states have been severely affected by the ongoing monsoon season. Several parts of north India including Delhi are struggling with the aftermaths of the heavy rainfall received earlier this month. Over 100 people have lost their lives in various incidents related to rain and flood across the country.
