A hot water pipe exploded in Moscow killing four and wounding several people. This incident occurred on Saturday (local time), says Reuters.
According to eyewitnesses and others, 10 people were injured in the accident.
The hot water pipe burst in a shopping mall in western Moscow. This mall houses 150 stores.
Investigators said there is no ammonia leakage from the burst pipe as was suspected earlier. Moscow’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin said several people have received burn injuries in the accident and they are receiving medical aid.
He expressed condolences over the incident. “Condolences to family and friends. Rescuers continue to work,” the mayor said.
Distressing footage
Video footage showed vehicles driving in knee-deep water outside the mall. The footage also showed steam flowing out from the water.
Another footage showed several injured people lying on the ground with burn injuries on their faces and bodies as they received urgent medical aid from the rescuers. Dozens of fire engines and ambulances lined up the pathway to the mall while rescuers hurriedly descended from their vehicles.
Another video showed a man in visible pain as he was stretchered out from the mall by rescuers.
Meanwhile, CNN, quoting TASS, has said dozens were wounded in the incident.
British newspaper Daily Mail said, “Workers at the shopping mall looked stunned as they congregated outside after evacuating. Some were draped in blankets after the terrifying incident.”
Criminal case lodged
TASS also reports that a criminal case has been filed over the death of four people.
A spokesperson for Moscow’s police department said, ” A criminal case has been opened on the grounds of a crime under Part 3 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (negligence in providing services that resulted in two or more deaths).”
