In recent times, the consequences of disregarding the importance of nature have been felt as devastating floods and landslides have affected cities across the country. The renowned Mansa Devi temple, situated on the hills behind Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, is now facing a grave threat. This temple attracts thousands of devotees daily, but the hills on which it stands are in danger due to increasing cracks and landslides.
Alarming reports indicate that the hills surrounding the Mansa Devi temple have experienced landslides at six different locations within a radius of just 1 to 1.5 kilometers. The rapid increase in such incidents after the rains has caused panic among the people living in the vicinity, and the Uttarakhand government is also feeling the pressure to address the situation.
Monsoon Menace
One of the reasons for the heightened risk is the geological composition of the mountains in this area. The presence of a considerable amount of sand mixed with soil makes the mountains susceptible to retaining moisture from previous rainfall, leading to loose soil and sand. This, in turn, weakens the stability of the hills and poses a significant threat to the population residing in the areas below the temple.
The populated areas, including Brahmapuri, Kashipur, Jogiamandi, and Upper Road Market, are home to around 12 thousand people who now live in fear of a potential disaster.
It is alarming to note that despite the lack of heavy rain in Haridwar in recent days, the incidents of landslides have escalated rapidly. This can be attributed to the lingering moisture from previous rainfall, which continues to affect the mountains’ structural integrity.
In light of this critical situation, the Uttarakhand government has sought assistance from geological experts from the central government to assess the extent of the danger and find suitable solutions to avert a major catastrophe. The urgency of the situation calls for immediate action to protect both the temple and the lives of the local population.
