Five most intense fights on Cricket field
1. Gautam Gambhir vs Kamran Akmal
During the Asia Cup 2010 at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, a heated exchange occurred between Gautam Gambhir and Kamran Akmal. The incident took place when Kamran Akmal appealed loudly and extensively to the umpire after Saeed Ajmal nearly dismissed the Indian opener with an outside-edge. Gambhir was displeased with the prolonged and loud appeal and confronted Akmal during the drinks break, expressing his dissatisfaction with his on-field behavior.
The situation escalated, and both players were on the brink of a physical altercation before MS Dhoni, the non-striking batsman, and the umpires intervened as peacemakers to defuse the tension.
2. Shane Warne vs Marlon Samuels
The late, great Australian cricketer, Shane Warne, was famously known as the “Bad Boy” of cricket, never hesitating to express himself to his opponents. The incident involving Marlon Samuels occurred after Warne had retired from international cricket. It took place during a Big Bash League (BBL) match in 2013 between Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. When Samuels prevented David Hussey from stealing a second run, Warne, unhappy with the incident, directed verbal abuse at him upon his arrival to bat for Renegades.
As the tensions escalated, Warne aggressively threw the ball at Samuels, striking him on the torso. In response, Marlon Samuels threw his bat in Warne’s direction, narrowly missing him. The altercation resulted in both players being fined and Warne receiving a one-match ban in the BBL as the Australian leg spinner.
3. Virat Kohli vs Naveen Ul Haq
The IPL 2023 witnessed one of the worst fights in the tournament’s history, involving Virat Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq. The incident unfolded during a league stage match between Lucknow Supergiants and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Ekana Cricket Stadium.
In the midst of a tense run chase for his team, Naveen-ul-Haq clashed with Virat Kohli, seemingly taking offense to the Indian player signalling for bouncers to be bowled at him. The altercation required the intervention of umpires, RCB players, and non-striker Amit Mishra to restore calm. After the match, tensions persisted as Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq continued their heated argument during the customary handshake between the teams. The situation escalated further with LSG team mentor Gautam Gambhir also involved in the battle.
4. James Anderson vs Michael Clarke
The 2013-14 Ashes series’ first Test showcased Mitchell Johnson’s masterful display of fast bowling. During the one-sided contest at the Gabba, when England faced an impending defeat against Australia, James Anderson, visibly uncomfortable with the bouncy pitch and opposition’s fast bowlers, confronted George Bailey, fielding at short leg.
Despite Bailey’s attempts to stand up to the English great, he was overpowered by Anderson’s fiery words. Sensing the situation, Australia’s captain Michael Clarke intervened to support his teammate, engaging in a heated exchange with James Anderson. Amid their altercation, Clarke was heard telling Anderson, “Face up then. Get ready for a broken fucken arm. Face up.” Eventually, Mitchell Johnson dismissed Anderson, catching him and claiming his wicket to secure Australia’s triumphant victory in the first Ashes Test.
5. Shakib vs Umpires
Shakib Al Hasan has had his fair share of disputes with umpires over the years. In 2021, during a Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, he lost his temper on the field when the on-field umpire didn’t give the opposition batter Mushfiqur Rahim an LBW decision. Shakib’s visible anger led to him kicking down the stumps and dislodging the bails. He engaged in a heated argument with the umpire, who had also made a few decisions against him earlier in the game.
As a consequence of his behaviour, Shakib Al Hasan was fined and received a three-match ban from the DPL. Regrettably, the incident prompted the umpire in question, Moniruzzaman, to resign from his match officiating duties in all forms of cricket.
