Ravi Shastri: With the Asia Cup 2023 drawing near, there is a mere two-week wait. While a few teams have already unveiled their squads, India remains the solitary team yet to disclose their roster for Group A. Jasprit Bumrah is anticipated to secure a place within the lineup, but the spotlight is on KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. As they approach the concluding phases of their rehabilitation, expectations rise for their inclusion in the definitive selection.
What did Ravi Shastri say on KL Rahul?
In the interim, Ravi Shastri, the former head coach of the Indian team, has expressed reservations about the inclusion of KL Rahul in the playing XI. Shastri believes that entrusting significant responsibilities to the 31-year-old, who has been out of action since sustaining an injury during the IPL, might be an excessive demand.
Ravi Shastri said, “See, when a player who has not played a single game and is recovering from injury, to think of him in the playing XI of the Asia Cup, you are asking too much from the player. Additionally, Rahul is a keeper. Coming from an injury and those range of movements, that is a no-no.”
Rahul has showcased his prowess in 54 ODIs while donning the Indian jersey, amassing a total of 1986 runs at an impressive average of 45.13. His impressive record includes five centuries and 13 half-centuries. Apart from the 31-year-old, India has the alternatives of Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson as potential wicketkeeper-batsman choices for the upcoming Asia Cup.
KL Rahul undergoing recovery
Significantly, Rahul suffered a notable thigh injury on May 1 during a match between LSG and RCB. Subsequent to the injury, the right-handed batter underwent a surgical procedure and was consequently absent from the IPL. Recently, he was observed practicing his wicket-keeping skills at the NCA, and he also engaged in batting sessions in the nets.
